Tel Aviv, (Horn post) Israel has carried out a new wave of airstrikes in southern Lebanon, with the military saying the operation was aimed at positions held by the Iran-backed Hezbollah group.
In a statement published on its official Telegram channel, the Israel Defense Forces said both ground and air units were involved in the coordinated assault, signaling an escalation in its ongoing military campaign along the Lebanese border.
Early Sunday, the IDF reported that nine Hezbollah fighters were killed in strikes conducted on Saturday evening. The claims could not be independently verified, and there was no immediate response from Hezbollah.
The latest developments come amid rising regional tensions linked to the broader confrontation involving Israel, the United States, and Iran. Lebanon has increasingly been drawn into the conflict following cross-border attacks by Hezbollah, which has launched rockets into northern Israel. Israel has responded with sustained aerial bombardments and, more recently, limited ground incursions into southern Lebanon.
Meanwhile, Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz has instructed troops to intensify operations, including targeting infrastructure allegedly used by Hezbollah. He specifically called for the destruction of bridges over the Litani River, which Israeli officials say are being used to transport weapons and fighters.
According to the IDF, recent airstrikes have already destroyed two key bridges spanning the Litani River, cutting off vital links between southern Lebanon and other parts of the country.
The situation remains fluid, with fears growing of a wider regional escalation as hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah continue to intensify.
