Mogadishu (Horn Post) Dr. Maryan Qaasin Ahmed has been elected as the Chairperson of Somalia’s Independent Human Rights Commission following an internal vote by commission members.
According to official results, a total of nine members participated in the vote. Dr. Maryan Qasin secured five votes, defeating her closest rival, Omar Abdalle Calasow, who received four votes.
The outcome confirms Dr. Maryan Qasin as the new head of the Independent Human Rights Commission, a key national institution mandated to promote and protect human rights across Somalia.
Speaking after her election, Dr. Maryan described the position as a major responsibility, emphasizing her commitment to fulfilling the mandate entrusted to her.
“This is a heavy responsibility placed upon me, and I ask God to grant me the strength and guidance to carry out this demanding role,” she said.
She further noted that her election came without prior campaigning, stating that she did not lobby for votes and was unaware of who supported her during the process.
The Independent Human Rights Commission plays a critical role in monitoring human rights conditions, advising state institutions, and ensuring compliance with national and international human rights obligations.
