Hargeisa, Somaliland (Horn post) The spokesperson for the President of the Republic of Somaliland, Hussein Adan Ige (Deyr), has described Israel’s official recognition of Somaliland as a historic fact reflecting political reality. The acknowledgment also marks an end to the longstanding but now defunct concept of a “Greater Somalia,” a vision that for over 75 years had been built on political speculation and centralization.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Hussein Deyr emphasized that the Greater Somalia ambition had historically brought instability, political violence, and division to the Horn of Africa, causing humanitarian challenges and hindering regional development.
He highlighted that Israel’s recognition of Somaliland is not only a matter of justice but also a logical alignment with current geopolitical and territorial realities.
“This recognition underscores the importance of stability and positive cooperation in the region, rather than exhausting efforts on the failed idea of a Greater Somalia,” Deyr wrote.
The spokesperson concluded that Somaliland’s recognition is an irreversible issue whose time has come, signaling a major step for peace, cooperation, and state-building in the Horn of Africa.
