Head of IGAD, Djibouti takes note of Eritrea’s decision to withdraw from the sub regional organization

DJIBOUTI, (Hornpost) The Republic of Djibouti, acting president of the Intergovernmental Authority for Development (IGAD), acted on Saturday of Eritrea to withdraw from the sub regional organization, the Djibouti Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced in a statement.

The official notification was sent to the IGAD executive secretariat by verbal on December 12, the text states. Djibouti says “regrets this new withdrawal” while stressing that it is a “sovereign decision” of the Eritrean authorities.

The statement recalls that Eritrea had reintegrated IGAD at its request, a decision made at the 14th ordinary summit of the organization, held in Djibouti on June 12, 2023, after several years of withdrawal.

HOST of the IGAD headquarters, Djibouti reaffirms its “total readiness for dialogue” with all member states, in a regional context marked by persistent tensions. The displayed objective remains to promote peace, stability and respect for the national sovereignty of each country in the sub region.

The organization, created in 1996 and which brings together eight East African states, “remains open to all the countries of the sub-region in accordance with its founding act”, still emphasizes Djibouti, leaving the door wide open to a possible revision of Eritrean’s position.
