Massive Turnout at Banadir Cup Final Highlights Mogadishu’s Stability, and Urges Somali Youth to Participate in Upcoming Local Elections says President of Somalia

Mogadishu, (Hornpost) – President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, attended the final match of the Banadir Districts Football Cup held at Mogadishu Stadium, where thousands of spectators gathered to witness the event.

Addressing the crowd at the Sports Village, the President said the massive turnout reflected the improving security and stability of the capital. He congratulated the two finalist districts, Howlwadaag and War-Sheekh, and noted that this year’s tournament strengthened social cohesion and promoted unity among communities.

President Hassan Sheikh called on Somali youth to demonstrate the same energy in the upcoming direct elections for local councils in Mogadishu.

“Young people, the same way you filled the stadium for football, come out and participate in the elections that will begin soon across the Banadir districts,” he said. “You have the opportunity; the decision is in your hands—elect the leaders who will represent your interests and your communities.”

The President also extended special congratulations to Howlwadaag District, which won the 2025 Banadir Cup, praising the players, coaches, management and supporters for their discipline, sportsmanship and positive spirit throughout the tournament.

Players and supporters from both finalist districts welcomed the President’s remarks, saying youth participation in elections is key to shaping Somalia’s future.

Background: Local Elections in Banadir

The Federal Government of Somalia is preparing to introduce direct elections for local councils in Mogadishu’s districts. The process aims to increase public participation, strengthen democratic institutions and give citizens the power to elect leaders at the district level for the first time in many years.

Abdirahman Ali, a young supporter from Howlwadaag, told Hornpost:

“If we can come together for football, we can come together to vote. We need leaders who understand young people.”

Sports officials also said the peaceful final match sends a strong message about security progress in Mogadishu.

A Banadir regional sports coordinator noted that the presence of thousands of spectators without incident, “proves that the city is more stable than it used to be.”

Political analysts view the President’s comments as part of a broader campaign to encourage civic engagement ahead of the first direct district-level elections in the capital. According to analysts, the government hopes that higher voter turnout — especially among youth — will make the elections more legitimate and inclusive.

Some community elders emphasized that local councils play an important role in daily governance, particularly on issues like security, sanitation and youth development. They urged young people to not only vote but also consider running for office.
