Davos, Switzerland — (Horn post) A high-level Ethiopian delegation, led by H.E. Ahmed Shide Mohammed, Ethiopia’s Minister of Finance, is taking part in the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting 2026, being held in Davos–Klosters from 19 to 23 January, under the theme “The Spirit of Dialogue.”
On 20 January, Minister Shide spoke at the high-level session titled “Africa’s Job Engine,” where he emphasized the transformative role of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) in generating inclusive employment opportunities for Africa’s rapidly growing youth population. He highlighted Ethiopia’s Homegrown Economic Reform Program 2.0, noting its focus on agri-food value chains, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), light manufacturing, industrial parks, and service sectors linked to urbanization.
Minister Shide also underscored the importance of the Jobs-First AfCFTA Production Compact for 2026, describing it as a strategic framework aimed at expanding employment, strengthening regional value chains, and empowering youth and women entrepreneurs across the continent.
Earlier, on 19 January, the Ethiopian finance minister addressed a panel discussion entitled “The Downing of the New Global Health Architecture.” During the session, he called for a fair, predictable, and country-led global health financing system, stressing the need for stronger national ownership in health development.
He highlighted Ethiopia’s successful health financing models, including pooled funding through the SDG Performance Fund, co-financing compacts, and increased investment in local pharmaceutical production. Minister Shide reaffirmed Ethiopia’s commitment to the Lusaka Agenda and the principle of “One Plan, One Budget, One Report,” advocating equity, solidarity, and shared global responsibility in addressing health challenges.
The Ethiopian delegation continues to hold multilateral and bilateral engagements on the sidelines of WEF 2026, joining global leaders in discussions aimed at addressing key economic, social, and global health challenges.
