BISHOFTU (Horn post) on Sunday commemorated the 90th anniversary of the Ethiopian Air Force with a major air show dubbed “The Black Lion,” highlighting nine decades of military aviation history, technological advancement, and national defense capability.
The event, held over the skies of Bishoftu, was attended by the Commander-in-Chief of the Ethiopian National Defense Forces, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD), alongside senior military officials, foreign guests, and international partners. The anniversary celebrations featured aerial demonstrations by fighter jets, helicopters, and a coordinated drone display, drawing wide public attention.
A central highlight of the show was the performance of Ethiopia’s SU-27 fighter jets, known locally as “Tirut,” which executed high-speed aerial acrobatics and tactical maneuvers. Ethiopian pilots showcased advanced technical skills and operational precision, underscoring the Air Force’s growing professionalism and combat readiness. Aircraft and teams from several partner countries also took part in the demonstration.
Speaking during the ceremony, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said the anniversary marked a historic milestone in Ethiopia’s defense journey, describing the Air Force as a pillar of national sovereignty and pride.
“We will not sleep to protect the national interest and dignity of Ethiopia,” the Prime Minister said, announcing a strategic plan to double the capacity of the Ethiopian Air Force over the next five years.
Ethiopian PM emphasized that the current strength of the Air Force is the result of cumulative efforts by successive governments across different eras.
“Recognizing that the Air Force’s current stature is the result of the combined work done over many years, we can confidently say that it has reached the highest and most advanced level in its 90-year history,” Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed stated.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, the Prime Minister also attended the opening of the Aviation Expo 2026, organized under the theme “Flying Forward, Building a Shared Future.”
The expo brings together national and international stakeholders to promote aviation technology, skills development, and cooperation, while reinforcing Ethiopia’s ambition to become a leading aviation and aerospace hub in Africa.
The commemorations concluded with a large-scale drone show over Bishoftu, symbolizing innovation, unity, and the future of Ethiopia’s air power. In his closing remarks, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed paid tribute to past and present members of the Air Force, describing the institution as a “shield of the nation” that has defended Ethiopia at critical moments in its history.
The 90th anniversary was widely described by officials as more than a ceremonial display, but a clear statement of sovereignty and strategic intent, reflecting Ethiopia’s view that lasting national prosperity is inseparable from strong and capable defense institutions.
