U.S. Explains Visa Denial for Somali Referee Omar Artan Ahead of FIFA World Cup Assignment.

Washington (Horn post) The United States has clarified the reason behind the visa denial of Somali football referee Omar Artan, who was set to become the first Somali official to officiate at a FIFA World Cup finals tournament.

According to U.S. officials, Artan’s visa application was rejected because he traveled using a Somali diplomatic passport, a category subject to specific entry requirements and additional scrutiny under U.S. immigration regulations.

The decision sparked concern within the football community after reports indicated that Artan had been selected for duties connected to the upcoming FIFA World Cup. The referee has been widely recognized as one of Somalia’s most accomplished football officials and has overseen several international matches under FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

The U.S. government has not indicated whether alternative travel arrangements or visa options could allow Artan to participate in future World Cup-related assignments.

The case has drawn attention to the challenges faced by some international sports officials and athletes when navigating visa and travel requirements for major global sporting events.
