HARGEISA, Somaliland (Horn Post)— Renowned Somali poet and lyricist Adam Tarabi Jama, one of the most influential figures in Somali literature and music, has died in Hargeisa at the age of 78, according to his family and local media.
Tarabi’s death marks the loss of one of Somalia’s most celebrated cultural figures, whose poetry, songs and theatrical productions helped define the country’s artistic landscape for more than five decades.

Born in 1948 near Aynaba in Somaliland’s Sool region, Tarabi spent his early childhood in Hargeisa before moving to Berbera, where he developed a passion for poetry and songwriting. He began writing in the mid-1960s and quickly established himself as one of the leading voices of Somali literature.
Throughout his career, Tarabi collaborated with many of Somalia’s most prominent composers, singers and playwrights, producing works that became classics in Somali music and theatre.
Among his best-known songs are Goor iyo Ayaan, Yufle, Liibaan Ma Leh Adduunyo, Dar Allaad u Hurdudaa, and Dawo, many of which were performed by legendary Somali artists and remain popular across the Somali-speaking world.
Beyond songwriting, Tarabi also wrote numerous stage plays during the 1970s and 1980s, contributing significantly to the development of Somali theatre and cultural expression.
Artists, writers, government officials and members of the public have paid tribute to Tarabi, describing him as a towering figure whose work preserved Somali language, heritage and identity.
He spent his later years in Hargeisa, where he remained active in literary and cultural circles until his death.
Tarabi leaves behind a rich legacy of poetry, music and drama that continues to inspire generations of Somali writers, musicians and performers.
