OTTAWA, Canada (Horn post) The Nomad Institute on Thursday welcomed growing international debate surrounding Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, describing the move as a significant diplomatic development with the potential to reshape security and political dynamics across the Horn of Africa.
Press Release:
In a statement issued from Ottawa, the institute praised an analysis by journalist Michael Freund titled “Will Israel Stand Alone for Somaliland?”, which argued that Israel’s recognition of Somaliland represents a principled foreign policy decision grounded in democracy, regional security and economic cooperation.
According to the statement, the article highlighted Somaliland’s strategic location near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, its democratic governance record and its role as a stable partner in counterterrorism and regional trade.
Freund reportedly urged Israel to move beyond symbolic recognition by strengthening long-term diplomatic engagement with Somaliland through investment, diplomatic representation and coordination with international allies including the United States and Ethiopia.
“Bold beginnings demand meaningful follow-through,” Freund wrote, calling on Jerusalem to lead broader international support for Somaliland’s statehood aspirations and democratic institutions.
The Nomad Institute echoed the call for deeper engagement, saying recognition should evolve into practical cooperation in areas such as security, education and humanitarian development.
The organization added that stronger ties between Israel and Somaliland could help reinforce regional peace and strengthen what it described as an “Abrahamic bridge” between the Jewish and Somaliland peoples.
The statement comes amid increasing geopolitical interest in the Horn of Africa, where maritime security, trade routes and regional alliances have gained heightened international attention.
