Erigavo, October 23, 2025 – (Hornpost) The recently concluded Sanag Peace Conference has been widely praised as a milestone in Somaliland’s efforts to reinforce internal harmony through dialogue and traditional reconciliation.
The conference, held in the regional capital Erigavo, gathered elders, scholars, women, and youth representatives from all communities across Sanag.
It ended with a joint declaration committing to lasting peace, coexistence, and social cooperation.
Throughout the process, President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillaahi (Cirro) emerged as a central figure in promoting dialogue and encouraging local ownership of the peace process. Delegates and observers alike commended his administration’s quiet diplomacy and constructive engagement that helped the conference reach consensus.
In his closing speech, President Cirro emphasized the symbolic and practical importance of peace in Sanag:
“Sanaag is the bridge that connects our people. The peace we have built here is not just a local settlement — it’s a collective promise to safeguard the unity and future of Somaliland,” he said.
“Our strength as a nation lies in our dialogue, our tolerance, and our shared vision for stability and development.”
Diplomatic sources in Hargeisa and regional observers have lauded the outcome, describing it as a “homegrown model of peace” in a region often marked by external mediation.
A senior diplomat from a Horn of Africa mission told Hornpost, “What Somaliland achieved in Ceerigaabo through community dialogue is something many in the region could learn from — a process owned by the people, guided by trust.”
Analysts suggest the conference marks one of the earliest tangible results of President Cirro’s reconciliation agenda, signaling his administration’s focus on internal stability as the foundation for political and economic growth.
As the follow-up committees begin implementing the resolutions reached, the Sanag peace initiative stands as a model of locally driven reconciliation and a testament to the enduring value of dialogue in Somaliland’s nation-building journey.
