NEW YORK —(HornPost) Somaliland President Irro discusses the country’s international recognition bid and regional security during a Council on Foreign Relations event in New York.
Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro discussed Somaliland’s bid for international recognition and the regional security landscape during a Council on Foreign Relations event in New York on Thursday.
The event, titled “A Conversation with President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi of Somaliland,” was held on Sept. 24, 2026, alongside the high-level week of the United Nations General Assembly. Irro was the featured speaker, while Ebenezer Obadare, a Douglas Dillon Senior Fellow for Africa Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations, moderated the discussion.
According to the Council on Foreign Relations, the discussion focused on Somaliland’s pursuit of international recognition and the security environment in the region.
Irro used the international forum to present Somaliland’s position on its recognition campaign and discuss issues affecting security and stability in the Horn of Africa.
The appearance comes as Somaliland continues its diplomatic efforts to gain international recognition and expand its engagement with governments and international institutions.
The Horn of Africa remains an important strategic region because of its location along major maritime routes linking the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean.
Irro’s participation in the CFR discussion provided an opportunity for Somaliland to present its foreign policy priorities and views on regional security before an international policy audience in New York.
