HARGEISA, Somaliland (Horn Post) Somaliland is reinforcing its environmental conservation agenda through increased oversight of protected areas, with senior officials conducting field inspections to assess the progress of conservation and ecological restoration initiatives at the Geed-Deeble Nature Reserve.
Minister of Environment and Climate Change Abdillahi Jama Osman, accompanied by Director General Abdi Ali Mahdi and other ministry officials, visited the reserve’s Wildlife Conservation Center and Botanical Garden to evaluate ongoing development projects and review efforts aimed at protecting biodiversity and strengthening environmental sustainability.
The inspection focused on the implementation status of conservation programs, habitat restoration activities, and infrastructure improvements designed to enhance the management of one of Somaliland’s most significant ecological sites. Officials received detailed briefings from reserve managers and technical staff responsible for executing environmental projects within the protected area.
Beyond the site assessment, the minister met with community elders, local leaders, and residents of the Geed-Deeble area to discuss the long-term protection and sustainable management of the reserve.
The discussions emphasized the critical role of local communities in safeguarding forests, wildlife, and other natural resources while supporting conservation objectives.
The visit reflects Somaliland’s growing emphasis on community-based environmental governance, recognizing that successful conservation depends on close collaboration between government institutions and local stakeholders. Authorities continue to promote public participation in protecting ecosystems as part of broader climate resilience and sustainable development policies.
Geed-Deeble Nature Reserve remains one of Somaliland’s key conservation areas, serving as an important habitat for native wildlife and plant species while contributing to biodiversity preservation, environmental education, and ecological research. Continued investment in conservation infrastructure and community engagement is expected to strengthen the reserve’s role in protecting Somaliland’s natural heritage amid increasing environmental and climate-related challenges.
