HARGEISA, Somaliland (Horn Post) — The Somaliland House of Representatives’ Committee on Internal Affairs, Defense and National Security visited the Somaliland National Army Headquarters on Tuesday, holding high-level discussions with military commanders as lawmakers intensified parliamentary oversight of the country’s ongoing security sector reforms.
The delegation was led by Committee Chairman Abdikarim Mead Isaq, accompanied by Deputy Chairman Guled Mohamed Warsame, committee members and parliamentary staff. The visit formed part of the House of Representatives’ constitutional oversight responsibilities over Somaliland’s security institutions.
During the meeting, Commander of the Somaliland National Army Maj. Gen. Nim’an Yusuf Gahnug briefed lawmakers on the overall status of the armed forces, outlining the military’s operational responsibilities, current security environment, institutional challenges and strategic plans aimed at strengthening the force’s capabilities.
According to officials, the commander also presented updates on ongoing efforts to improve military professionalism, operational readiness and institutional development as Somaliland continues investing in defense modernization.
Committee members questioned military leaders on a range of issues, including defense planning, force development, national security priorities and the implementation of military reforms. The army commander responded to lawmakers’ inquiries, providing detailed explanations on the armed forces’ current activities and future objectives.
Speaking after the meeting, Committee Chairman Abdikarim Mecad Isaq thanked the National Army leadership for its cooperation and transparency, describing the engagement as an important element of parliamentary accountability.
“The meeting strengthens the constitutional oversight role of the House of Representatives while enhancing cooperation between Parliament and the National Army,” the committee chairman said.

The visit comes as Somaliland’s government advances a broader agenda to modernize its security institutions following the current administration’s assumption of office. Increased engagement between Parliament and military leadership reflects an effort to reinforce civilian oversight while ensuring greater transparency in defense planning.
Defense reform has emerged as one of the government’s strategic priorities, with authorities pursuing expanded military restructuring, enhanced training programs and improved equipment for the Somaliland National Army. Regular parliamentary consultations with military commanders are expected to play an increasingly important role in evaluating defense preparedness, budget oversight and long-term security planning as Somaliland seeks to enhance regional stability and strengthen its national defense capabilities.
