HARGEISA, Somaliland (Horn Post) — Somaliland’s Cabinet has unanimously approved a new Livestock Quarantine Law, describing it as a strategic measure to safeguard animal health, strengthen livestock exports and enhance the country’s reputation in international markets.
The decision was made during the 69th Cabinet meeting, chaired by President of the Republic of Somaliland Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi “Irro” and attended by Vice President Mohamed Ali Aw Abdi, according to a statement issued by the Presidency.
Cabinet approves Livestock Quarantine Law
Cabinet ministers held extensive discussions on the strategic importance of the legislation, saying the law will improve animal health standards, modernize quarantine procedures and ensure Somaliland’s livestock exports comply with international sanitary requirements.
The Cabinet described the law as a cornerstone of Somaliland’s livestock sector, emphasizing its role in boosting the national economy and maintaining the confidence of international export markets.
Following deliberations, ministers unanimously approved the Livestock Quarantine Law, with no votes against or abstentions.
Interior minister says security remains stable.
Interior and National Security Minister Abdalle Mohamed Arab briefed the Cabinet on the country’s security situation, stating that Somaliland remains peaceful and that no major security incidents or unrest have been reported across its regions.
He said security agencies continue to work to preserve national peace, stability and public safety.
Government tightens rules on official vehicle registration
Transport and Roads Development Minister Osman Ibrahim Nur “Afgab” presented new regulations governing the use of government vehicle registration plates.
Under the new procedures, government vehicles must retain their official GT registration plates and replacing them with private vehicle plates will no longer be permitted.
The minister said the reforms are intended to improve accountability, strengthen security, enhance transparency in the management of state assets and ensure government vehicles are used solely for official duties.
President Irro reaffirms commitment to peace and dialogue
Concluding the meeting, President Irro said peace, national unity and social cohesion remain the Somaliland government’s highest priorities.
He reaffirmed that Sool is part of Somaliland and described the people of the region as fellow Somaliland citizens.
The president called for residents returning from Sool to be welcomed with openness and urged that any grievances be resolved through dialogue, mutual understanding, reconciliation and national unity.
The cabinet meeting highlighted the government’s focus on strengthening governance, protecting key economic sectors, enhancing public sector accountability and preserving stability across Somaliland.
