HODEIDAH, Yemen — (Horn post) A cargo ship came under attack near Yemen’s Red Sea port of Hodeidah, prompting a security alert from the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), as tensions continue to threaten commercial shipping in the region.
According to UKMTO, a cargo vessel located approximately 30 nautical miles southwest of Hodeidah Port transmitted a distress call after reporting that it had been targeted by unidentified attackers.
The British maritime security agency said authorities are investigating the incident and advised all vessels operating in the area to exercise extreme caution and immediately report any suspicious activity.
The agency did not identify the attackers or provide details on the extent of the damage or whether there were any casualties aboard the vessel.
Yemen Government Reports Deadly Houthi Attack
In a separate development, Yemen’s internationally recognized government said 14 of its soldiers were killed in an attack carried out by Houthi forces south of Hodeidah.
The reported assault underscores the fragile security situation in western Yemen, where fighting between government forces and the Iran-aligned Houthis continues despite periodic diplomatic efforts to reduce hostilities.
The attack on the cargo ship comes amid ongoing concerns over maritime security in the Red Sea, a vital international shipping route that has experienced repeated disruptions due to the conflict in Yemen.
Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the maritime incident is connected to the broader conflict or whether any group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
