HARGEISA, Somaliland — (Horn post) Minister of Interior and Security of the Republic of Somaliland, Abdalle Mohamed Arab, on Saturday held a high-level briefing meeting with a committee of lawmakers from the House of Elders (Guurti) tasked with overseeing an ongoing peace and reconciliation process in the Awdal and Selel regions.
The meeting focused on operational plans surrounding the peace conference currently underway to mediate tensions between two communities involved in recent inter-clan conflict in parts of western Somaliland.
During the discussions, Minister Abdalle Mohamed Arab praised the Guurti delegation for their active role in leading reconciliation efforts, commending what he described as their strong commitment to restoring peace and long-term stability in the affected areas.
The Interior Minister said the committee had taken significant responsibility in ensuring that the peace initiative succeeds, emphasizing that achieving lasting peace in the region is essential for strengthening broader national security and preserving social cohesion across Somaliland.
“The peace efforts being carried out by the House of Elders are critical to restoring full stability in these communities. Sustainable peace in these regions serves as an important foundation for Somaliland’s wider security and peaceful coexistence” the minister said.
Members of the Guurti peace committee also thanked the Interior Minister for his continued cooperation and support, noting that the ministry has played a consistent role in facilitating dialogue and helping bridge differences between the two communities involved in the dispute.
At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides agreed to accelerate and finalize the ongoing peace conference process, ensuring the continuation of mediation efforts aimed at securing a final agreement between the two communities affected by the recent clashes.
The peace initiative comes as Somaliland authorities intensify efforts to maintain stability and strengthen conflict resolution mechanisms in regions facing localized security tensions.
