Somaliland Launches Rehabilitation Project for Wacays-Oodane Water Dam

HARGEISA, Somaliland (Horn post) Somaliland officials have officially launched a rehabilitation project for the Wacays-Oodane water dam, a key infrastructure initiative aimed at improving water access and supporting local communities in the region.

The groundbreaking ceremony was led by Director General of the Ministry of Water Development Abdishakur Ismail Hussein, accompanied by the Minister of Trade and Tourism and the Deputy Minister of Civil Aviation and Airports Development.

The Wacays-Oodane dam is considered a critical water source for residents and pastoral communities in the area. Officials said the rehabilitation project is expected to strengthen water security, improve livelihoods and enhance access to reliable water supplies for communities living in Wacays-Oodane and surrounding settlements.

The project is being implemented through a partnership between Somaliland’s Ministry of Water Development and FOA, with the goal of upgrading water infrastructure and expanding essential water services.

Speaking during the ceremony, government officials emphasized the importance of protecting and developing water resources to support sustainable development and climate resilience. They also called on local residents to play an active role in safeguarding and maintaining the facility to ensure long-term benefits.

The rehabilitation of the Wacays-Oodane dam forms part of broader efforts by the Somaliland government to improve water infrastructure and address recurring water challenges affecting rural communities and livestock-dependent populations.
