HARGEISA, Somaliland (Horn Post) — Former Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi has expressed condolences following the deadly protest that erupted in the town of Sheikh, calling for greater dialogue and responsible conflict resolution to prevent further loss of life.
In a statement released Friday, Bihi extended his sympathies to the families of two citizens who died during the unrest — Canab Omar Jama and Mohamed Omar Elmi — and offered prayers for those injured in the incident.
“I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families, relatives and the people of Somaliland over the tragic deaths of Canab Omar Jama and Mohamed Omar Elmi, who lost their lives during yesterday’s protest in Sheikh,” Bihi said. “May Allah grant them mercy and provide patience and faith to their loved ones. I also pray for the speedy recovery of those who were injured.”
Bihi argued that the deaths could have been avoided if authorities had listened more carefully to public grievances and addressed concerns through dialogue and consultation.
The former president said the protest was triggered by public anger over the arrest of Sultan Ahmed Qabile, whom he described as having peacefully expressed his views without causing harm to the nation. He questioned what he characterized as unequal treatment, claiming that individuals accused of more serious offenses against Somaliland had received more favorable handling.
Bihi emphasized that traditional leaders are an integral part of Somaliland society and, while they are not above criticism or mistakes, their dignity, status and customary role should be respected.
Former Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi also noted that similar incidents have occurred before and alleged that the handling of the matter bypassed established legal procedures, including court oversight.
The former president urged the government to address recurring disputes through consultation, dialogue and consensus-building before they escalate into violence.
“Somaliland faces numerous challenges and external threats,” Bihi said. “The government should ensure that incidents of this nature do not become opportunities for those who seek to undermine the nation.”
The protest in Sheikh has intensified public debate over the treatment of traditional leaders, security measures and the government’s approach to resolving politically sensitive disputes in Somaliland.
