HARGEISA, Somaliland (Horn post) The President of the Republic of Somaliland H.E Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro held a high-level meeting with the Association of Local Governments of Somaliland (ALGASL) to discuss the critical role local administrations play in improving public services, strengthening decentralization and advancing modern governance across the country.
During the meeting, President Irro emphasized that local governments represent the closest level of administration to citizens and are often the first point at which people experience government services and state institutions.
President Irro stressed the need to strengthen the administrative, technical and financial capacity of municipalities so they can effectively fulfill their responsibilities and deliver essential services to communities.
The president also underlined the importance of stronger cooperation and coordination among Somaliland’s local governments to encourage the sharing of experience and accelerate the delivery of services required by citizens.
Somaliland’s Minister of Local Government and Urban Development, along with the mayors of Berbera, Borama and Hargeisa, also addressed the meeting and thanked the president for engaging directly with local leaders. The officials highlighted the importance of decentralization and enhanced cooperation between the central government and local administrations.
President Irro stated that effective collaboration between the central government and local authorities is a key pillar for implementing Somaliland’s national development agenda, strengthening social unity and reinforcing national cohesion.
Following the broader meeting, the Somaliland president held a separate session with the newly appointed mayor, deputy mayor and executive secretary of the local government administration.
