DUBAI (Horn Post) — President of the Republic of Somaliland, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi “Irro,” has said that Somaliland supports the Middle East peace initiative led by former US President Donald Trump, emphasizing peaceful coexistence and long-term regional stability.
Speaking in an interview with Sky News Arabic, President Irro addressed a range of issues, including Somaliland’s relations with Israel, prospects for international recognition, and discussions surrounding Somalia–Somaliland unity. The interview lasted nearly 30 minutes and covered several regional and international policy matters.
Responding to questions about reports suggesting that Somaliland had offered to host Palestinians in exchange for recognition by Israel, President Irro firmly rejected the claims.
“This has not been discussed, it has not been proposed, and it does not exist,” President Irro said.
He reiterated that Somaliland’s position is based on supporting peace initiatives rather than engaging in speculative or unfounded arrangements.
President Irro stated that Somaliland backs the peace plan for Gaza promoted by Donald Trump, describing peace as the only sustainable path forward.
“The Government of Somaliland supports President Donald Trump’s peace initiative for Gaza and the Palestinian people,” President Irro said.
“We affirm our belief that nations can coexist and that peace is the only lasting path to stability and mutual understanding.”
The Somaliland leader also addressed the broader issue of international recognition, expressing optimism that more countries would formally recognize Somaliland in the future.
“Our expectation is that other states will recognize Somaliland, whether Arab, Islamic, African, Latin American, or Asian countries,” he said.
President Irro revealed that he had written letters to the leaders of 193 countries on May 17, 2015, seeking recognition for Somaliland, noting that Israel was the only country to formally respond at the time.
“I believe more responses will come in the future,” he added.
President of the Republic of Somaliland, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi “Irro further stated that while a small number of countries have opposed Somaliland’s recognition and others have remained silent, he expects even critics to reassess their positions.
The interview reflects Somaliland’s continued diplomatic outreach and its efforts to position itself as a pro-peace actor in regional and international affairs.
