Hargeisa (Horn post) Berbera Port, located on the southern shore of the Red Sea near the Bab el-Mandeb strait, is emerging as one of the most strategically significant ports in the Horn of Africa, playing a central role in regional geopolitics, trade, and Somaliland’s international recognition.
The port’s strategic location offers direct access to one of the world’s busiest maritime routes, linking the Mediterranean, Middle East, and Indian Ocean trade corridors. Its proximity to the Bab el-Mandeb chokepoint — a critical passage for global oil and shipping traffic — makes Berbera a key asset for both commercial and military considerations in the region.
Somaliland has leveraged Berbera’s geopolitical importance to strengthen its international profile, contributing to recognition efforts abroad.
The port’s modernization, undertaken by DP World of the United Arab Emirates through an agreement with the Somaliland government, has transformed it into a state-of-the-art facility capable of handling increasing trade volumes. Despite Somalia’s federal government previously claiming to have canceled the deal, no action was enforced, as it lacks authority over Somaliland’s territory.
In addition to the port, Berbera hosts one of Africa’s longest runways at Berbera International Airport and a newly established UAE military base. These developments further enhance Somaliland’s strategic relevance, providing both economic opportunities and regional security partnerships.
Historically, Berbera’s significance dates back to the Cold War era, when both the United States and the Soviet Union developed facilities there as part of their regional strategies, reflecting the port’s longstanding value in global geopolitics. At that time, Somaliland was part of Somalia, but its geographic importance was already recognized internationally.
Today, Berbera Port continues to serve as a linchpin for trade and security in the Horn of Africa, reinforcing Somaliland’s economic independence and diplomatic leverage while strengthening its ties with global partners in the Gulf and beyond.
