Stockholm (Horn post) Almost fifty members of the Swedish Parliament (Riksdag) have signed a parliamentary motion urging the Government of Sweden to formally recognize the Republic of Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state.
According to information made public, the lawmakers argue that Somaliland has, for more than three decades, demonstrated political stability, effective governance, and a commitment to democratic principles, distinguishing it from the ongoing instability in Somalia. The motion calls on the Swedish government to reassess its policy and take concrete diplomatic steps toward recognition.
The signatories emphasize Somaliland’s record of holding peaceful elections, maintaining security, and building functioning state institutions since it declared independence in 1991.
They also note that recognition would strengthen Sweden’s engagement in the Horn of Africa and support stability, democracy, and development in the region.
While the motion does not automatically translate into government policy, it represents a significant political signal within Sweden’s legislature and reflects growing international debate on Somaliland’s status. If adopted or acted upon, Sweden would become one of the first European countries to move toward formal recognition of Somaliland.
The development is likely to be closely watched in Hargeisa and across the Horn of Africa, as Somaliland continues its long-standing campaign for international recognition.
