HARGEISA, Somaliland (Horn post) Ministry of Transport and Road Development of the Republic of Somaliland, in partnership with local organization FAFSAC, has unveiled a comprehensive national study examining the growing challenge of traffic accidents and assessing the government’s institutional capacity to improve road safety across the country.
The six-month study, officially presented this week, provides an in-depth assessment of the causes of road accidents in Somaliland and outlines a long-term strategy aimed at reducing annual traffic accidents by 15 percent every year through policy reforms, stronger enforcement and improved institutional coordination.
According to officials, the research focused on four critical areas considered essential to tackling Somaliland’s road safety crisis: the economic impact of traffic accidents, legal and policy reforms needed to strengthen transport regulation, the operational capacity and technical readiness of the Ministry and the Somaliland Traffic Police, as well as improving coordination among government institutions responsible for road safety management.
The study was conducted over a period of six months and involved senior academic experts from Ethiopia, including specialists with extensive experience in traffic accident prevention, transport management and road safety policy development.
Officials said the findings will now be transformed into a national implementation framework that will guide Somaliland’s future road safety strategy and help authorities systematically reduce the number of road accidents recorded across the country each year.
The Minister of Transport and Road Development of the Republic of Somaliland Osman Ibrahim Nur Afgab said the initiative represents a major step toward modernizing Somaliland’s transport sector, strengthening institutional capacity and improving public safety as authorities move to address one of the country’s growing road safety challenges.
The government hopes the strategy will significantly reduce accident-related deaths, improve transport regulation enforcement and create a safer road network for drivers, passengers and communities across Somaliland.
The new road safety initiative comes as Somaliland continues broader efforts to improve infrastructure development, modernize transport governance and introduce long-term solutions to rising traffic accident rates nationwide.
