Somaliland President Bids Farewell to Outgoing UN Agency Head Tedla Damte.

HARGEISA, Somaliland — (Horn post) President of the Republic of Somaliland H.E Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro on Sunday received outgoing United Nations agency representative Tedla M. Damte at the Presidential Palace in Hargeisa, praising his leadership and contributions to development initiatives during his tenure in Somaliland.

 

President Irro commended Damte for his dedication, effective leadership and tangible achievements, particularly in advancing programs that support peace and stability, state-building efforts, institutional cooperation, education, healthcare, water access and youth development across Somaliland.

 

The president said Damte played a significant role in strengthening collaboration between UN agencies and Somaliland government institutions, helping to improve services and opportunities for local communities.

 

For his part, Damte expressed gratitude to President Irro for the reception and the cooperation extended to him throughout his assignment in Somaliland. He praised the president’s leadership and highlighted the strong working relationship he enjoyed with both the government and the people of Somaliland.

 

“Mr. President, I would like to sincerely thank you for the trust, cooperation and openness you have shown me during my time in Somaliland,” Damte said. “It has been a great honor in my professional career to work alongside and support the Government and people of the Republic of Somaliland.”

 

Damte noted that he initially arrived in Somaliland as the head of UNICEF operations but was leaving with a deeper personal connection to the country.

 

“I came to Somaliland as UNICEF’s representative, but I am leaving feeling that I am a true friend of Somaliland,” he said.

 

The meeting was also attended by Somaliland Presidential Affairs Minister Khadar Hussein Abdi and Dr. Fatima Mohamed Ismail, acting head of the World Health Organization (WHO) office in Somaliland.

 

Damte said one of the most remarkable aspects of his experience in Somaliland was witnessing the resilience, determination and long-term vision of its people and government.

 

He highlighted Somaliland’s commitment to building its future through peace, dialogue, tolerance and cooperation, describing these values as key drivers of its progress.

 

At the conclusion of the meeting, President Irro wished Damte success in his future assignments and responsibilities, thanking him for his service and contributions to Somaliland’s development.
