Mogadishu (Horn post) Somalia’s federal government has announced plans to proceed with universal suffrage elections, despite mounting opposition from several regional states and political stakeholders.
In a statement, the Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation said the country is entering a new phase of “inclusive and transparent” elections based on constitutional principles, emphasizing a shift toward a one-person, one-vote system.
The ministry described elections as a fundamental constitutional right, highlighting their role in strengthening public trust, promoting transparency, and enabling citizens to directly choose their representatives across all levels of government.
Officials stressed that the electoral process would be “free and fair,” grounded in democratic values, accountability, and the protection of citizens’ rights. The ministry added that all relevant institutions involved in organizing the elections would soon fulfill their mandates in accordance with national laws.
However, the announcement comes amid deepening political tensions. At least three federal member states, along with opposition groups, have rejected the proposed electoral framework, raising concerns over its implementation and legitimacy.
The latest dispute has emerged between the federal government led by Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and authorities in Southwest State, further complicating an already fragile political landscape.
The federal government reiterated its commitment to strengthening state institutions, advancing democracy and implementing a credible electoral system.
Nonetheless, analysts warn that unresolved disagreements between Mogadishu and regional administrations could delay the process or undermine its credibility if consensus is not reached.
Somalia has long struggled to transition from an indirect electoral model based on clan representation to a universal suffrage system, making the proposed reforms both significant and contentious.
