In a symbolic tribute to Somali national heroes who fought for freedom and unity, the president laid a wreath at the iconic Daljirka Dahsoon Monument, paying homage to generations who sacrificed their lives for the nation’s sovereignty.
“July 1 remains a defining moment in Somalia’s history, representing the sacrifices made for freedom, unity and the establishment of Somali statehood,” President Hassan Sheikh said during the national commemoration.
Military Parade Showcases Somalia’s Growing Defense Capabilities
A major highlight of the Somalia Independence Day 2026 celebrations was a large-scale military parade staged in Mogadishu, where units from the Somali National Armed Forces marched in formation and demonstrated the country’s evolving defense capabilities.
The parade featured armored military vehicles, advanced combat equipment and warplanes, underscoring what government officials described as ongoing progress in rebuilding and modernizing Somalia’s national security institutions.
Observers said the display reflected the government’s intensified efforts to strengthen military readiness amid continued security challenges facing the Horn of Africa nation.
“The development and modernization of our armed forces demonstrate Somalia’s determination to defend its sovereignty and build lasting national stability,” the president said.
President Attends Midnight Flag-Raising Ceremony
Later Tuesday night, President Hassan Sheikh also attended the traditional midnight July 1 flag-raising ceremony in Mogadishu, one of Somalia’s most symbolic annual national events.
The ceremony marked the exact historic moment when the Somali national flag was first officially raised in Mogadishu 66 years ago, commemorating independence for southern regions and the unification process that formed modern Somalia.
At precisely midnight, soldiers from the Somali National Army ceremonially raised the national flag while carrying out formal state honors in front of senior government officials and invited guests.
Addressing the nation, President Hassan Sheikh congratulated Somalis worldwide and emphasized the importance of safeguarding the country’s sovereignty and preserving national cohesion.
“Today’s generation carries the responsibility of protecting our unity and advancing the vision left behind by the founders of the Somali Republic,” he stated.
Call for Unity and Nation-Building
Throughout both ceremonies, President Hassan Sheikh stressed that Somalia’s future depends on national unity, collective responsibility and strengthening state institutions, calling on citizens to uphold the principles of independence and work toward building a peaceful, self-reliant and prosperous nation.
The 66th anniversary celebrations of Somalia’s independence come as the federal government continues efforts focused on security reform, state-building and economic recovery while commemorating one of the country’s most historically significant national holidays.
