YAOUNDÉ, (Hornpost) October 27, 2025 — Cameroon’s long-time leader Paul Biya has been re-elected for the eighth consecutive term, extending his more than four-decade rule over the Central African nation.
Biya, who first came to power in 1982, remains Africa’s oldest sitting president and the second-longest-serving leader on the continent. Despite his advanced age, the 92-year-old has once again secured the presidency in a vote widely seen as a formality.
Often absent from public view, Biya has drawn attention for spending extended periods outside the country — particularly in luxury hotels in Switzerland. His long absences and old age have repeatedly sparked rumors of his death, which have always proven unfounded.
Originally rising to power with the backing of then-President Ahmadou Ahidjo, Biya promised sweeping reforms when he assumed office. However, over the years, his rule has increasingly been characterized by centralized power and limited political freedoms.
Since a narrow and contested election in 1992, Biya has managed to sideline political opponents, consolidate his grip on power, and maintain control amid deep divisions within the opposition — divisions that analysts say have helped him retain authority.
Despite criticism of electoral manipulation and authoritarian governance, Biya’s supporters credit him with expanding public education, including the establishment of new state schools and universities across Cameroon.
With this latest re-election, Paul Biya continues his unprecedented tenure, symbolizing both political continuity and the resilience of entrenched leadership in parts of Africa.
