Foreign Minister Gideon Saar calls on 44 ambassadors to push for terrorist designation of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, as Israel names its first ambassador to Somaliland
HARGEISA / JERUSALEM (Horn post) — Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Saar has urged a coordinated global campaign to designate Iran’s Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist organization, addressing a group of 44 Israeli ambassadors stationed worldwide, including newly appointed envoy to Somaliland Michael Lotem.
In a statement released following consultations with foreign diplomats serving in Israel, Saar stressed what he described as growing international recognition of the threat posed by Iran’s leadership and its military apparatus.
“I sharpened the importance of joining more countries in declaring Iran’s Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist organization,” Saar said. “Already 44 countries have done so, and it has great political and practical importance. Every week new countries are joining.”
Saar added that shifting geopolitical dynamics in the Middle East and beyond have increased awareness of Iran’s influence and activities. “In the region and in the world today, we understand much more how dangerous the Iranian regime is,” he said.
The remarks come as Israel intensifies diplomatic efforts to build broader international consensus against Tehran, particularly amid ongoing tensions involving Iran-backed groups across the region.
Saar also referenced the continued standoff with Hamas, linking it to broader regional security concerns and a plan previously associated with former U.S. President Donald Trump. “Hamas continues to refuse to dismantle its weapons and thus violates Trump’s plan,” he said.
The briefing included ambassadors posted to multiple regions, among them Lotem, who has been named as Israel’s first ambassador to Somaliland — a move that signals a potential expansion of Israel’s diplomatic footprint in the Horn of Africa.
While Somaliland has not yet received widespread international recognition as a sovereign state, Israel’s engagement reflects increasing geopolitical interest in the strategically located region along the Red Sea corridor.
Analysts say Israel’s dual-track approach — combining diplomatic outreach with security messaging — is aimed at countering Iran’s regional influence while strengthening ties with emerging and non-traditional partners.
