Urban Planning Experts Convene in Hargeisa to Shape Somaliland’s Cities by 2036.
Hargeisa, Somaliland (Horn post) A major urban planning workshop focusing on Somaliland’s Cities Expansion Vision 2036 was held in Hargeisa, bringing together municipal representatives and urban development experts from across the country, officials said.
The event, hosted by the Hargeisa Local Government, gathered delegates from the cities of Borama, Gabiley, Wajale, and Berbera to discuss long-term strategies for managing rapid urban growth and improving city infrastructure.
Hargeisa Mayor Abdikarim Ahmed Moge officially opened the workshop, emphasizing that urban expansion planning is a cornerstone of sustainable development and essential for addressing the challenges posed by fast-growing populations.
The Cities Expansion Vision 2036 aims to enhance urban structure, promote organized land use planning, and create cleaner, more sustainable living environments. The plan also seeks to curb unplanned urban sprawl while ensuring efficient delivery of essential services, including water supply, road networks, electricity, and social services.
Officials highlighted that the strategy is expected to play a key role in boosting economic growth by encouraging both domestic and foreign investment, as well as generating employment opportunities. Improved connectivity between cities is also seen as a driver of trade and mobility across Somaliland.
Participants underscored the importance of adopting a unified, long-term urban development framework to ensure sustainable growth, improved quality of life, and future-ready cities across Somaliland.
