Cairo (Horn post) Egypt has announced a significant new natural gas discovery in its Western Desert, in a move expected to boost domestic energy production and support the country’s economy.
The Ministry of Petroleum said the discovery was made by U.S.-based energy company Apache Corporation, which has been conducting exploration activities in the area.
According to officials, production from the newly discovered field is projected to reach around 26 million cubic feet per day, potentially adding substantial capacity to Egypt’s gas output.
The development comes as Egypt faces economic pressures linked to regional instability, including disruptions affecting the Suez Canal, a key source of national revenue.
Authorities say the government is increasingly prioritizing oil and gas exploration as part of broader efforts to diversify income streams and strengthen energy security.
The discovery is expected to enhance Egypt’s position as a regional energy player while helping to offset economic challenges driven by external shocks.
