DUBAI (Horn Post) – The United Arab Emirates National Guard has rescued 22 people after a fire broke out aboard a cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman.
The National Guard said it received a distress call from the vessel’s crew. It quickly sent emergency teams to the scene.
Rescuers reached the ship and evacuated all 22 people. The crew members were all Arab nationals, according to the official statement.
The National Guard said it provided emergency assistance before handing them over to the relevant authorities. It added that everyone was in stable condition.
Authorities have not yet revealed what caused the fire.
Iran Reports Fires on Two Oil Tankers
The rescue comes amid growing security concerns in the Gulf region. Tensions have also raised concerns about shipping near the Strait of Hormuz.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has reported fires on two oil tankers near the strategic waterway. The force said the vessels had encountered explosive devices.
The IRGC alleged that both ships had switched off their navigation systems. It also claimed they were using routes that had not been authorized.
According to the Iranian force, one vessel came under attack east of the Strait of Hormuz. The second incident took place inside the waterway.
The IRGC accused the vessels of several maritime violations. However, it did not provide independently verified evidence to support its claims.
US Announces New Iran-Focused Force
Separately, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced a special operational force focused on Iran.
CENTCOM also outlined plans to expand the existing maritime blockade targeting Iranian ports. The command said the measures aim to stop Iran from moving weapons through land routes.
The latest developments have increased concerns over security across the Gulf. They could also affect commercial shipping and the movement of energy supplies.
Strategic Importance of the Gulf
The Gulf of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz are vital routes for international trade. The Strait connects major oil-producing countries with global markets.
As a result, any escalation in the area could disrupt shipping operations. It could also affect energy supplies and increase risks for commercial vessels.
