Moagdishu Somalia (HornPost Skynews tv) — Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has spoken about regional security tensions, foreign interference in Somalia and Israel’s recognition of Somaliland in an interview with Sky News.
In the wide-ranging interview, published by Sky News on Friday, Mohamud discussed Somalia’s efforts to avoid being drawn into regional conflicts and outlined his views on the motivations behind Israel’s decision to recognize Somaliland.
The interview comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region, where strategic ports, maritime security and competing regional interests have become increasingly important.
Mohamud also addressed what he described as foreign interference in Somalia, highlighting concerns over external involvement in the country’s political and security affairs.
A central topic was Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, a self-governing territory in the Horn of Africa that declared independence from Somalia in 1991. Somaliland has sought international recognition for decades, while Somalia’s federal government continues to oppose its separation.
The recognition issue has increased diplomatic tensions between Mogadishu and Hargeisa and drawn greater attention to the region’s strategic position along the Gulf of Aden and near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a key route for international shipping.
Sky News titled the interview “Piracy, terrorism and Israel: Somali president speaks to Sky News.”
