Somaliland President Holds Strategic Security Talks With U.S. SOCAFRICA Commander Claude K. Tudor Jr.
The United States dispatched two separate military delegations to Somaliland and Somalia, underscoring Washington’s expanding security engagement across the Horn of Africa as regional concerns over the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden and maritime security continue to grow.
According to a statement from the Somaliland Presidency, President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi Irro held high-level strategic talks in Hargeisa with Maj. Gen. Claude K. Tudor Jr., Commander of U.S. Special Operations Command Africa (SOCAFRICA), who led a senior American delegation.
The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral security cooperation, counterterrorism efforts, maritime security and protecting strategic international shipping routes through the Red Sea, the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the Gulf of Aden.
President Irro emphasized Somaliland’s strategic location, noting that the country possesses more than 850 kilometers (528 miles) of coastline along one of the world’s busiest maritime corridors. He said Somaliland’s coastal security is essential not only for regional stability but also for global maritime commerce.
The Somaliland leader also stressed that any international partner seeking security cooperation along Somaliland’s coastline should engage directly with Somaliland authorities.
Irro highlighted Somaliland’s more than three decades of relative peace, political stability and democratic governance, reaffirming his administration’s readiness to deepen cooperation with U.S. military and security agencies in combating terrorism, piracy, organized crime and other regional security threats.
Maj. Gen. Tudor said the United States and Somaliland share important security interests on land and at sea, describing stability in the Horn of Africa and the security of international shipping lanes as key priorities.
He added that Washington is prepared to expand cooperation with Somaliland through intelligence sharing, strategic coordination, professional exchanges and broader security collaboration.
The meeting concluded with both sides agreeing to strengthen cooperation on issues of mutual strategic interest.
Separate U.S. Delegations
The visit to Somaliland came as a separate U.S. military delegation visited neighboring Somalia.
Gen. Dagvin R.M. Anderson, Commander of U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), led the delegation to Mogadishu, while Maj. Gen. Claude K. Tudor Jr. headed the SOCAFRICA delegation received in Hargeisa.
The parallel visits highlight Washington’s differentiated security engagement with Somaliland and Somalia as the United States seeks to strengthen partnerships aimed at addressing terrorism, maritime security and regional stability across the Horn of Africa.
