Lionel Messi Explains Argentina’s Comeback Against England, Previews Spain World Cup Final

Messi

Atlanta, Georgia (Horn Post) Argentina captain Lionel Messi said his team’s qualification for the FIFA World Cup final reflects its resilience, unity, and determination after a dramatic comeback victory over England in the semifinals.

England appeared on course to reach only the second World Cup final in its history, having taken the lead through Anthony Gordon in the 55th minute. However, Argentina staged another late comeback, with Enzo Fernández equalizing in the 85th minute before substitute Lautaro Martínez scored the winner in stoppage time (90+2). Messi provided the decisive assists for both goals.

Messi Praises Argentina’s Character

Speaking after the match, Messi praised the mentality of the Argentine squad.

> “What this team is achieving is incredible. It is another demonstration of our character, determination, team spirit, the way we play together, our strength, and our patience in managing matches. It was truly remarkable.”

Messi added:

“We’ve been saying this throughout the tournament, and now we’ve reached another final, our second consecutive one. Of course, I’m extremely happy. But our story isn’t over yet.”

Messi Describes England Clash as Historically Significant

Messi acknowledged that the semifinal carried added significance because of the long-standing historical context between Argentina and England.

“We spoke about it before the match. In the end, it was just a football match, but it was a very special one, especially because it was against England, with all the historical context surrounding it. Of all the possible semifinal opponents, this was the match we most wanted to win.”

His remarks came after Argentina’s players celebrated the victory by displaying a banner reading **”The Malvinas (Falkland Islands) Are Argentine,”** referencing the long-running sovereignty dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom over the South Atlantic archipelago. The territorial disagreement escalated into the 1982 Falklands War, and Argentina continues to claim sovereignty over the islands.

Messi Expects Tough World Cup Final Against Spain

Looking ahead to the final, Messi praised Spain, describing the European side as one of the strongest teams in international football.

“Spain is a fantastic team with outstanding players, and they play football at a very high level. I know them well, and I understand the football philosophy they have carefully developed over the years.”

He concluded:

“I’ve faced some of these players during my time at Barcelona, and I’ve continued following this national team. It will be a very special match and an exceptional final.”
