HARGEISA, Somaliland (Horn post) President of the Republic of Somaliland H.E Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro has issued an executive decree ordering a significant reduction in the price of drinking water sold through Hargeisa Water Agency distribution points, a move aimed at easing the cost of living for residents.
Under the presidential directive, the price of one cubic meter of water has been reduced from 13,000 Somaliland shillings (approximately $1.30) to 8,000 Somaliland shillings (approximately $0.80), representing a decrease of nearly 40%.
The decision is expected to provide relief to households and businesses that rely on water supplied through official water distribution points operated by the Hargeisa Water Agency.
However, access to piped water remains a challenge across large parts of Hargeisa. Many residents do not receive water directly from the Hargeisa Water Agency network and instead depend on privately owned water tanker trucks for their daily supply, often at higher costs.
The price reduction comes amid broader government efforts to improve public services and reduce the financial burden on citizens, particularly in urban areas facing growing demand for reliable water access.
Observers say the impact of the measure will largely depend on the extent to which residents can access water supplied through the agency’s infrastructure.
