SRINAGAR, India (Horn post) Nearly 300 people were left stranded mid-air after a technical malfunction abruptly halted operations of the Gulmarg Gondola, one of the world’s highest cable car systems in Indian-administered Kashmir, according to reports citing Al Jazeera.
Officials said the gondola system stopped unexpectedly while passengers were suspended over mountainous terrain, triggering panic and alarm among those onboard. Emergency rescue teams were quickly deployed to the site and began evacuation operations using ropes, ladders, and other technical mountaineering equipment to safely bring passengers down.
Authorities confirmed that all available resources are being used to ensure the safe recovery of those stranded. No casualties have been reported so far, and an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the mechanical failure.
The Gulmarg Gondola, a major tourist attraction in the Himalayan resort region of Gulmarg, transports visitors across high-altitude terrain for skiing, sightseeing, and access to snow-covered mountain areas. It operates via steel cables stretched across steep valleys and peaks, making it one of the highest and longest cable car systems globally.
Officials noted that operations can occasionally be disrupted due to technical faults or adverse weather conditions, though such large-scale stoppages involving hundreds of passengers are rare.
