Somalian President Accused of Crackdown on Critics Amid Political Tensions.

MOGADISHU, Somalia (Horn Post) — President of Federal Republic of Somalia Hassan Sheikh Mohamud which his term ends 15 May 2026 is facing growing criticism from opposition voices and youth activists over alleged arrests, intimidation and the use of security forces against critics opposed to his political agenda.

President Hassan said that the approval of the controversial Somali constitution was approved at a time when opposition politicians, the regional governments of Jubaland and Puntland, President Hassan Sheikh said that the approval of the constitution benefited from the one-year extension provided for in the constitution. But all the opposition forums have been silent and believe that Hassan Sheikh is the former President of Somalia and his 4-year term ends on May 15, 2026.

Critics accuse the former president of using military and security institutions to suppress dissent, particularly among young Somalis voicing concerns over political uncertainty, corruption, displacement and disputes surrounding Somalia’s electoral process and governance.

Youth groups and opposition figures argue that Somalian citizens have a constitutional right to express concerns about the country’s future, unemployment and instability, warning that intimidation and restrictions on free speech could deepen political tensions.

Calls have intensified for an inclusive political process, credible elections and stronger protections for civil liberties and constitutional rights in Somalia.

Separately, residents in Mogadishu have raised complaints over alleged land disputes and evictions involving public property and residential areas. Community members accuse government-linked actors of transferring state-owned land to private business interests without providing compensation or resettlement for affected families.

Several residents have publicly appealed for government intervention, urging authorities to adopt housing and urban development policies that protect vulnerable communities and ensure transparency in land management.

The allegations come amid heightened political debate in Somalia over governance, accountability and the future direction of the country’s democratic institutions.
