TEHRAN (Horn post) Conflicting reports from the United States and Iran emerged Friday after an American military aircraft was shot down over Iranian territory, with both governments offering differing accounts of the type of aircraft involved and the status of its crew.
Iranian state media and official spokespeople claimed their air defenses had successfully downed a U.S. F‑35 Lightning II stealth fighter and released images they said showed wreckage consistent with that advanced aircraft. Tehran hailed the action as a significant achievement for its air defense forces.
U.S. officials and international media, however, have disputed the Iranian characterization. According to U.S. sources and imagery assessed by independent outlets, the aircraft was a U.S. Air Force F‑15E Strike Eagle, a less advanced but still highly capable fighter jet. The discrepancy in aircraft identification has fueled debate over the details of the engagement.
The U.S. military reported that one of the two crew members aboard the aircraft has been rescued and is alive. Search and rescue operations are ongoing for the second crew member, U.S. officials said, as efforts continue to locate the missing airman in territory now controlled by Iranian forces.
Iranian authorities have appealed to residents for assistance in finding the second pilot and have indicated that a financial reward may be offered for credible information leading to his recovery.
The incident marks a significant escalation in tensions between Washington and Tehran, which have been at odds over military operations and security issues in the region. Independent analysts noted the conflicting accounts reflect the “fog of war,” as verification remains difficult amid ongoing hostilities and restricted access to the crash site.
