DJIBOUTI CITY — (Horn post) President of the republic of Djibouti Ismail Omar Guelleh has officially launched his campaign for the upcoming presidential election, setting the stage for what is widely expected to be an uncontested vote next month.
Guelleh, who has led Djibouti since 1999, faces only one challenger — a candidate previously affiliated with his ruling party, the People’s Rally for Progress (RPP). The absence of a broad opposition presence has reinforced expectations that the veteran leader will secure a sixth term in office with ease.
The campaign launch marks the formal start of the electoral process, though political analysts note that the outcome appears largely predetermined due to limited competition and the dominance of the ruling party across state institutions.
Guelleh’s anticipated reelection follows a constitutional amendment introduced last year, which removed term limits that had previously barred him from seeking another mandate. The change enabled the long-serving president to extend his political tenure, further consolidating his hold on power.
Having governed for more than two decades, Guelleh is among Africa’s longest-serving heads of state. His presidency accounts for roughly half of Djibouti’s post-independence history, underscoring his enduring influence over the country’s political landscape.
Djibouti, strategically located in the Horn of Africa, hosts several foreign military bases and plays a key role in regional security and international shipping routes. Despite its geopolitical importance, the country has faced recurring criticism from rights groups over political freedoms and the limited space for opposition parties.
The upcoming election is expected to proceed with minimal disruption, though observers say it will be closely watched for indications of voter participation and broader public sentiment in a tightly controlled political environment.
