Addis Ababa — (Horn post) Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Tuesday held talks with Israeli President Isaac Herzog in Addis Ababa, focusing on bilateral relations and regional cooperation.

According to official statements, the meeting addressed ways to strengthen ties between Ethiopia and Israel, with discussions covering agriculture, technology, innovation, water management, health, and security cooperation.

Prime Minister Abiy welcomed President Herzog to Addis Ababa, underscoring Ethiopia’s long-standing relations with Israel and the importance of expanding cooperation in development-oriented sectors.

“I welcomed President Isaac Herzog of Israel today for productive discussions during his official visit. We explored the relations between Ethiopia and Israel and considered ways to improve collaboration in areas of mutual interest” said Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed

Prime Minister Abiy reaffirmed Ethiopia’s commitment to expanding collaboration and enhancing diplomatic engagement with Israel.

President Herzog reaffirmed Israel’s commitment to deepening partnerships with Ethiopia and enhancing people-to-people and institutional ties.

Analysis: Somaliland Recognition and the Horn of Africa

The Addis Ababa talks come amid evolving diplomatic dynamics in the Horn of Africa, where regional actors are reassessing strategic partnerships, trade corridors, and security cooperation.

Israel’s recent move to establish formal diplomatic relations with Somaliland has added a new layer to regional diplomacy. Analysts note that this development could influence broader international discussions on Somaliland’s long-standing pursuit of recognition, while also affecting geopolitical calculations across the Horn of Africa.

For Ethiopia, a key regional power with extensive political and economic interests across the Horn, such developments carry implications for Red Sea access, regional trade routes, and stability. Observers suggest Addis Ababa is likely to continue a cautious, pragmatic approach—engaging regional and international partners while avoiding positions that could escalate regional tensions.

Overall, the Abiy–Herzog meeting reflects a wider trend of increased engagement between Middle Eastern states and Horn of Africa countries, as the region navigates shifting alliances and emerging diplomatic realities.
