Addis Ababa (Horn post) Ethiopia and the United Kingdom have signed a series of cooperation agreements aimed at strengthening bilateral relations, enhancing public investment management, and advancing strategic infrastructure development.
The agreements were concluded during high-level discussions between Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali and the UK’s Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, Rt. Hon. Yvette Cooper. The talks focused on key bilateral and regional issues of mutual interest, including economic cooperation, development partnership, and regional peace and security.
As part of the engagement, the two sides oversaw the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Technical Cooperation in Public Investment and Asset Management, implemented under the Ethiopia Investment Advisory Facility. The agreement was signed by UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper and Ethiopia’s Minister of Finance, H.E. Ahmed Shide, underscoring the central role of economic governance and fiscal reform in the bilateral partnership.
In addition, Ethiopia and the United Kingdom witnessed the conclusion of a joint development agreement for two major power transmission projects: the Hurso–Aysha 400 kV Transmission Project and the Degehbur–Kebridehar 132 kV Transmission Project. The projects are expected to strengthen Ethiopia’s national grid, improve energy access in eastern regions, and support long-term economic growth.
Foreign Ministers Discuss Bilateral Ties and Regional Security:
Separately, Ethiopia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gedion Timothewos, held a meeting with UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, during which both sides reaffirmed the strong and longstanding relations between Ethiopia and the United Kingdom. The two ministers emphasized the importance of elevating bilateral ties and exchanged views on regional peace and security issues of shared concern.
Officials from both countries noted that the newly signed agreements represent an important step toward deepening Ethiopia–UK cooperation in investment, infrastructure, and regional stability, while reinforcing their commitment to sustained diplomatic engagement.
