Netanyahu announces formal recognition after virtual talks with President Irro, pledging expanded cooperation in security, technology, health and economic development.
JERUSALEM/HARGEISA (Horn post) The State of Israel has officially recognized the Republic of Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state, becoming the first country to formally extend diplomatic recognition to Somaliland in a landmark move with major geopolitical implications for the Horn of Africa.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the decision following a high-level virtual meeting with Somaliland President Dr. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi Irro. The recognition was formalized through a joint declaration signed by Prime Minister Netanyahu, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, and President Irro.
According to the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office, the declaration was issued in the spirit of the Abraham Accords initiated under former U.S. President Donald Trump and reflects a shared commitment to peace, regional stability, and strategic cooperation.
Netanyahu described the development as a “historic moment” and praised President Irro’s leadership in advancing peace and stability across the Horn of Africa. He also extended an official invitation for the Somaliland president to visit Israel in the near future.
President Irro welcomed Israel’s recognition and thanked the Israeli government for what he called a historic decision supporting Somaliland’s right to sovereign statehood and international recognition. He also commended Israel’s efforts in counterterrorism and regional peacebuilding.
Israel announced plans to immediately deepen bilateral relations with Somaliland through cooperation in agriculture, healthcare, technology, trade, and economic development.
In a parallel statement, the Somaliland government confirmed that the recognition followed a formal video conference held on Dec. 26, 2025, during which both leaders reaffirmed Somaliland’s right to full international recognition.
Hargeisa described the move as a “historic and transformative milestone” that opens a new chapter in diplomatic engagement, economic growth, security cooperation, and technological advancement.
The recognition is expected to reshape diplomatic dynamics in the Horn of Africa and could influence broader international engagement with Somaliland, which has maintained relative peace, democratic governance, and self-rule since declaring independence in 1991.
