Hargeisa (Hornpost) The United Kingdom has expressed deep concern over the recent events in Borama, where 22 people were reported to have lost their lives, including 17 civilians, during unrest earlier this month.
Speaking at a ceremony in Hargeisa to mark International Human Rights Day, Ms. Tatiana Fernandes, the Deputy Head of Office and Development Counsellor, noted that the loss of life was “deeply troubling” and underscored the importance of upholding internationally recognized human rights standards during public-order situations.
Referring to the incident, Ms. Fernandes stated that “excessive force against civilians can never be justified,” reiterating the United Kingdom’s long-standing position that the protection of civilians and respect for human rights are cornerstones of stability and good governance.
She called on the Somaliland authorities to carry out a transparent, impartial, and comprehensive investigation to establish the facts surrounding the Borama clashes.
Such an inquiry, she said, would be essential in ensuring accountability, strengthening public confidence in state institutions, and helping to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Ms. Fernandes added that the UK remains committed to supporting efforts that promote peace, stability, and responsible governance across the region, and encouraged all stakeholders to priorities dialogue, restraint, and the rule of law as the country navigates a sensitive period.
