Hargeisa (Hornpost) The Ministry of Communications and Technology of the Republic of Somaliland and the Taiwan Technical Mission (TTM) have officially signed a strategic agreement to establish a new National Data Center for Somaliland.
This project is a vital part of Somaliland’s efforts to advance modern, technology-driven governance (e-Government). It will serve as a cornerstone for the protection, storage, and management of government data, while significantly reducing reliance on external services and strengthening the country’s digital sovereignty. Somaliland’s e-Government initiative is a key pillar of its strategic vision to build a modern state, enabling citizens and businesses to benefit more effectively from technology.
The National Data Center will serve as the central hub for storing, managing, and protecting government information. It will greatly reduce the risks of cyber threats and reliance on third-party services, thereby reinforcing Somaliland’s independence in managing its national data.
This step demonstrates the Somaliland government’s strong commitment to developing modern digital infrastructure, which is crucial for expanding e-services, enhancing administrative efficiency, and strengthening public trust.
The center will be capable of securely storing critical government data, including citizen records, financial information, social services, and institutional management systems. Furthermore, it will open the door to expanding e-Government services, allowing citizens to directly access digital services regardless of their location.
The initiative comes at a time when governments around the world face growing needs to safeguard their national data, especially in an era of rising technological threats such as cyber-attacks, data theft, and the insecurity of foreign-managed services.
In addition, the new center will provide an opportunity to create integrated platforms for sharing government information. This will minimize service delays and bureaucratic inefficiencies, while also improving transparency and accountability across public institutions.
The establishment of the National Data Center marks a strategic milestone that shows Somaliland is moving firmly toward digital advancement and modern governance. It stands as a symbol of self-reliance, technological independence, and forward-looking vision for improving public services, protecting data, and building a digital future that serves its citizens.
