UNHCR Reports Civilian Deaths, Injuries and Mass Displacement Following Mogadishu Clashes.

MOGADISHU, Somalia (Horn Post) — The United Nations refugee agency, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, has reported significant civilian casualties and displacement following recent clashes in Mogadishu between forces aligned with the Somali federal government and opposition groups.

According to UNHCR, at least 13 people were killed and 189 others injured during the violence, while more than 12,500 residents were forced to flee their homes as fighting spread across parts of the Somali capital. The displaced families are in urgent need of shelter, food, clean water and humanitarian assistance.

The clashes erupted amid escalating political tensions and disputes between the Federal Government of Somalia and opposition leaders, triggering heavy exchanges of gunfire in several neighborhoods of Mogadishu. Residents reported widespread fear as civilians fled conflict-affected areas in search of safety.

Humanitarian agencies have warned that the latest violence has worsened the humanitarian situation in the capital, placing additional pressure on already vulnerable communities and displacement sites.

The United Nations and international partners have called on all parties to exercise restraint, protect civilians and resolve political differences through dialogue rather than violence.

While the humanitarian impact of the clashes continues to grow, neither the Federal Government of Somalia nor opposition leaders have issued detailed public statements addressing the reported civilian casualties, injuries and displacement figures cited by humanitarian organizations.

The latest unrest has renewed concerns about political instability in Somalia and its impact on civilian populations, with aid agencies urging immediate assistance for those displaced by the fighting.
