CAIRO/HARGEISA (Horn Post) – Egypt has reaffirmed its support for Somalia’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity following separate high-level telephone conversations between Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and his Somali and Turkish counterparts on Saturday.
According to Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Foreign Minister Abdulsalam Ali discussed bilateral relations and regional developments with Abdelatty during a phone call.
“The two ministers discussed bilateral relations and regional developments, reaffirming Egypt’s steadfast support for the sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity, and national institutions of Somalia,” Somalia’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Egypt Rejects Recognition of Somaliland
In a more detailed statement, Egypt’s Foreign Ministry said the ministers reviewed bilateral cooperation, developments inside Somalia and the wider security situation in the Horn of Africa.
Abdelatty reiterated Cairo’s “full support” for Somalia and its national institutions, stressing Egypt’s commitment to Somalia’s security and stability.
The Egyptian minister also reaffirmed Cairo’s longstanding position supporting Somalia’s unity and territorial integrity, while expressing Egypt’s rejection of any recognition of Somaliland, describing such a move as inconsistent with its policy supporting Somalia’s sovereignty.
Somali Foreign Minister Abdulsalam Ali thanked Egypt for its continued political, development and security assistance, emphasizing Mogadishu’s commitment to maintaining close coordination with Cairo on regional issues.
Egypt and Türkiye Coordinate on Regional Issues
Later the same day, Abdelatty also held talks with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.
According to Egypt’s Foreign Ministry, the two ministers reviewed the rapid development of Egyptian Turkish relations and discussed a range of regional issues, including the Horn of Africa, Gaza, Syria, Sudan, Libya and Lebanon.
They also stressed the importance of reducing regional tensions, supporting diplomatic dialogue, respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, and strengthening cooperation through regional mechanisms involving Egypt, Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.
Both ministers also reaffirmed their opposition to any forced displacement of Palestinians and called for increased humanitarian assistance to Gaza.
Analysis: Growing Egypt–Türkiye–Somalia Coordination
The sequence of diplomatic contacts suggests increasing coordination among Egypt, Türkiye and Somalia on strategic issues affecting the Horn of Africa.
The conversations come amid heightened regional attention following Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, a development that has introduced a new geopolitical dimension to the Horn.
Türkiye has invested heavily in Somalia over the past decade, including military cooperation, security training, infrastructure projects and economic partnerships centered in Mogadishu. Egypt, meanwhile, has strengthened political and security ties with Somalia as part of its broader engagement in the Horn of Africa.
Against this backdrop, Cairo’s reaffirmation of its opposition to recognizing Somaliland and its consultations with both Somalia and Türkiye on the same day indicate that the three governments are seeking closer diplomatic coordination on regional developments.
While officials from Egypt, Türkiye and Somalia have publicly emphasized support for Somalia’s territorial integrity, they have not explicitly stated that their recent consultations were aimed at responding to Israel’s recognition of Somaliland. However, the timing of the discussions has drawn attention from regional observers because the recognition could reshape diplomatic alignments and strategic calculations in the Horn of Africa.
For Türkiye in particular, any significant shift in the region’s diplomatic landscape has the potential to affect its longstanding political, security and economic interests in Somalia, where Ankara remains one of Mogadishu’s principal international partners.
